The other day I had an appointment with a student who I usually meet around 6 pm on the weekends. Much to my surprise, she asked me if we could move our appointment earlier (to around 1) or later because “six o’clock is right in the middle of [her] day.” I imagine if you’re a parent this sounds pretty typical, but I’ll admit that I reacted as though she had three heads. Since I am usually exhausted by eight at night, I did a little research about what on earth makes 6 p.m. equal noon for teens, and I found this great article about adolescent sleep needs. It may not warrant calling the dinner hour “the middle of the day,” but it was informative at the least.
